promised land

i am exiled in ancestral places

foreign among familiar faces

waiting

and while wandering

through desert sands

bitter harsh against my skin

i journey on

to this far-off land

i am promised

i am in

i live between planes

on plains

in tents

a temporary stayer

in this land

forever

i sojourn among peoples

a resident alien

i dig my own wells

and i raise my own herds

and i do not worship

at the altars of their gods

but i bury my dead here

this land will be mine

This poem was inspired by the biblical story of Abraham, found in Genesis 12-25.
